Telangana BJP Protests Sonia Gandhi’s Comments on President
Hyderabad: On Saturday, February 1, the Telangana Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a protest against Congress senior leader Sonia Gandhi’s remark about President Droupadi Murmu. The controversy erupted after President Murmu’s inaugural address to Parliament, when Sonia Gandhi was heard commenting to her children, Rahul and Priyanka, “The poor lady, the President, was very tired by the end… she could hardly speak, poor thing.”
The video of Sonia’s remark quickly spread across social media, sparking outrage, with BJP leaders accusing her of insulting India’s first tribal President. In protest, the Telangana BJP burned effigies of the former Congress president while chanting slogans like "Rahul Gandhi Down Down."
The Rashtrapati Bhavan condemned Sonia Gandhi’s comment, calling it unacceptable and in poor taste, stating that it “hurt the dignity of the high office.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also criticized Sonia’s statement, arguing that it insulted people who rise from disadvantaged backgrounds, including Dalits, tribals, and OBCs, to lead better lives. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi, a member of the tribal community, joined in the criticism, saying the remark devalued the Santhal community.
“The disrespectful and condescending remarks made by Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi against Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji, are deeply reprehensible and expose the Congress party’s elitist attitude. Sonia Gandhi’s comment, ‘Poor lady President Murmu got tired at the end,’ and Rahul Gandhi’s ‘boring’ remark, are not just insults to India’s first tribal woman President, but also a slight against the Santhal community, the people of Odisha, and the democratic values of our nation,” he tweeted.
