"Union Budget offers nothing for Telangana, we won't tolerate injustice: Dy CM"
Hyderabad: Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, on Saturday, February 1, criticized the Union Budget for failing to allocate any significant resources to the state. He said the budget reflected a lack of understanding of Telangana’s unique challenges, adding, "It shows a glaring disregard for the state’s needs and developmental priorities."
Following the Union Budget announcement, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy convened a cabinet meeting, after which Vikramarka remarked, “The people of Telangana will no longer accept this step-motherly treatment. Telangana’s contribution to the nation’s progress is undeniable, and it deserves equitable treatment, not exclusion. The Centre must recognize Telangana’s potential and provide the resources it rightfully deserves.”
Bhatti, who also holds the finance portfolio, criticized the increase in Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) allocations, which rose by 30.5 percent to Rs 5.41 lakh crore. He argued that this move undermines states' fiscal autonomy and does not reflect the concerns and priorities of state governments.
He also pointed out the budget’s failure to allocate funds for Telangana's priority projects, particularly water conservation and irrigation, which are essential to the state’s agricultural sector. “The absence of support for Telangana’s irrigation initiatives is a direct blow to our farmers,” he said. "The budget’s focus on rural prosperity rings hollow when it ignores our state’s pioneering efforts in water management."
Telangana IT Minister D. Sridhar Babu also expressed disappointment, criticizing the budget for not addressing key state projects like the Musi Rejuvenation Project, Metro Rail expansion, and the underground drainage master plan. He noted that the state government had requested Rs 1.63 lakh crore in central support but received no allocation.
Sridhar Babu further accused the Union government of political bias, citing substantial allocations for poll-bound states like Delhi, Bihar, and Andhra Pradesh. "Telangana has been deliberately ignored, even though the state elected eight BJP MPs," he said. "The Modi government has betrayed the people of Telangana, and the BRS, which maintains a secret alliance with the BJP, is not doing enough to press the BJP for the state’s needs."
Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President B. Mahesh Kumar Goud also condemned the Union Budget, calling it a "grave injustice" to the people of Telangana. He criticized the Centre for not allocating any funds for the state, referring to the budget as a “donkey’s egg,” meaning insignificant. Goud described the budget as politically motivated, with a focus on Bihar’s upcoming elections, and accused the BJP of discriminating against Telangana.
He emphasized that taxes collected from across the country should be equally distributed to all states and expressed frustration at the Union government’s failure to provide Telangana with its rightful share.
