Raids reveal insect infestation at restaurants in Hyderabad’s Jubilee Hills
Hyderabad: On February 1, the food safety department conducted raids at Kishkinda Kitchen and Poshnosh Lounge and Bar, located in Hyderabad’s Jubilee Hills. The inspections revealed several food safety and hygiene violations across both establishments.
At Kishkinda Kitchen, the food safety team discovered several issues, including the absence of required documents such as water analysis reports, Fostac certificates, and employee medical records. The kitchen was found in poor hygiene conditions, with refrigerators containing food waste and clogged drains. Semi-prepared food and raw materials were improperly stored together, and vegetables, like lemons and potatoes, had spoiled. Additionally, live cockroaches were observed, and rat feces were found in storage areas, confirming a rodent infestation. Expired food items, such as Real Fruit Orange Juice and Button Mushrooms, were discarded. Food handlers were also found working without gloves, raising serious health concerns.
Poshnosh Lounge and Bar faced similar issues. The restaurant was found operating with an expired license and lacked essential documents, including water analysis reports, pest control records, and employee medical certificates. The kitchen's condition was poor, with unclean refrigerators and inadequate drainage on the floor. Furthermore, the establishment had an open exterior without proper insect-proofing. There was improper storage of both food and non-food items, with expired and misbranded products, including Sichuan Pepper without importer details and Citric Acid intended for industrial use, found on-site. Several expired items, including Soy Sauce, Papad packets, and Rasam powder, were discarded, and insect-infested loose cashew nuts were seized.
The Telangana food safety department has ramped up its efforts to ensure hygiene standards at food establishments. Since March, they have conducted 4,366 inspections and collected over 3,300 food samples from restaurants, cafes, and sweet shops in Hyderabad. Inspectors have highlighted recurring violations, such as improper labeling, unsafe food handling practices, uncovered bins, insect infestations, and spoiled produce. Additionally, many food handlers were found not wearing gloves during food preparation, further compounding hygiene concerns.
