Telangana Chief Minister Criticizes Premature BC Census Release Ahead of Cabinet Approval

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy expressed strong discontent with ministers for releasing the caste census details, including the Backward Class (BC) data, to the media without prior cabinet approval. The report was issued by irrigation minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Sunday, February 1.

Sources indicate that BC associations and some leaders within the ruling Congress criticized the report for numerous inaccuracies, noting that the BC population appears to have declined compared to previous records. Amid widespread opposition to the report's findings, the scheduled press conference on Monday, February 2—intended to follow a meeting on SC sub-categorization—was reportedly postponed.

It is also well known that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and irrigation minister Uttam Kumar Reddy, who previously served as the state Congress president, have had a contentious relationship, with reports suggesting that Uttam has ambitions for the top post.

The much-anticipated caste survey in Telangana is now complete. The findings reveal that 46.25 percent of the state’s population (1,64,09,179 people) belong to the Backward Class. The Socio-Economic, Educational, Employment, Political, and Caste (SEEEPC) survey—released by state civil supplies minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Sunday, February 2—covered 96.9 percent of households in Telangana and surveyed 3,54,77,554 individuals. According to the survey, Scheduled Castes (SCs) make up 17.43 percent (61,84,319 people) of the population, while Scheduled Tribes (STs) account for 10.45 percent (37,05,929 individuals).

Regarding the Muslim community in Telangana, the survey found that 44,57,012 individuals, or 12.56 percent of the total population, belong to the minority group. Among these, 35,76,588 are classified as Backward Class (BC), representing 10.08 percent, while 8,80,424 individuals (2.48 percent) are categorized as Other Castes (OC).
