Telangana to Lodge Complaint Against Andhra Pradesh Over Excessive Krishna Water Utilization

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has decided to file a complaint with the Centre against Andhra Pradesh for drawing more water from the Krishna River than its allocated share. Taking serious note of the issue, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Monday directed the Irrigation Department to formally raise the matter with the Centre.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the Centre must take responsibility for preventing Andhra Pradesh from exceeding its prescribed quota. At a review meeting attended by Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, he urged irrigation officials to remain vigilant in managing Krishna water usage from the Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar projects.

Revanth Reddy underscored the importance of a telemetry system to monitor water usage and curb Andhra Pradesh’s excess withdrawals. However, officials informed him that the Andhra Pradesh government had not contributed its share of funds for installing the system. In response, the Chief Minister instructed Irrigation Principal Secretary Rahul Bojja to immediately write to the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB), confirming that Telangana would cover the full cost of the telemetry system and urging its swift implementation.

Revanth Reddy also reiterated that the allocation and monitoring of water shares between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh fall under the jurisdiction of the Central Water Commission (CWC).

Meanwhile, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) on Sunday accused the Congress-led Telangana government of allowing Andhra Pradesh to divert Krishna water unchecked. He claimed that due to the government’s inaction, Andhra Pradesh had already consumed 646 TMC from Krishna and had been drawing 10,000 cusecs per day through the Nagarjuna Sagar right canal for the last three months.

In addition to addressing the Krishna water dispute, Revanth Reddy directed officials to release water for agricultural needs as per the existing plan. He instructed them to anticipate extreme summer conditions and take necessary precautions to ensure uninterrupted water supply for irrigation. Officials were also asked to conduct regular field visits and closely monitor the situation to safeguard crops.

During the review meeting, irrigation officials briefed the Chief Minister on the water levels in key reservoirs, including Srisailam, Nagarjuna Sagar, and SRSP. He stressed the need to judiciously manage available water resources to meet the state’s drinking water and irrigation demands, especially over the next three critical months, when demand for water and electricity is expected to rise significantly.
