Congress Accuses Police of 'Manhandling' Women Protesters in Video

In New Delhi, the Congress alleges that its women's wing workers faced rough treatment from the police during a protest against inflation outside the BJP headquarters. A video shared by the Congress displayed a uniformed policeman pulling a female protester while facing resistance. Sanjeev Kumar, the station house officer, was also seen pushing another woman demonstrator.

Police sources defended the actions, stating that the officer was attempting to retrieve an effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the protesters. However, the Congress accused the police of disregarding protocols by deploying male officers instead of female personnel to handle women protesters.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh emphasized that the protesters were simply exercising their democratic right to protest against rising inflation. Meanwhile, police sources claimed the demonstrators lacked prior permission for the gathering, highlighting the ban on large assemblies in the area.

Amidst the exchange, Congress leader KC Venugopal criticized the police, labeling them "BJP goons in uniform" and demanding accountability regarding the instructions given to male officials to handle female protesters. The police, on the other hand, asserted that women officers were present at the scene and mentioned alleged attempts by protesters to damage statues while hindering police duties.
