National nutrition month observed at CARE Hospitals

Hyderabad: A balanced and nutritious diet is an essential aspect of a healthy lifestyle and overall well-being. In India, every year, September 1 to 7th is observed as National Nutrition Week by the government, in order to spread awareness about nutrition, the importance of having healthy eating habits and how eating right could help in curbing the perils of malnutrition.

The theme this year is ‘Feeding Smart Right from Start' which encourages the citizens to inculcate the habit of eating right from the beginning.

In order to raise awareness on the importance of nutrition & healthy eating, CARE Hospitals, Nampally organized a health awareness session at the hospital. The session was inaugurated by chief guest A. Ramana Reddy - Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central Zone, Hyderabad, in the presence of Syed Kamran Husain, HCOO-CARE Hospitals, Nampally, Dr Navin Chand - Medical Superintendent, Madhurima Sinha, HOD - Nutrition and dietetics and other doctors of the hospital.

Highlighting the importance of Nutrition, A. Ramana Reddy mentioned “Food provides our body with energy, protein, essential fats, vitamins and minerals, that helps our body to function properly. Therefore, a balanced diet is important for good health and well-being. Good nutrition is necessary as it helps boost immunity and protects you from chronic diseases.”

Madhurima Sinha, HOD further added “Malnutrition is a physical state of an unbalanced nutrition level. It can be either due to under- nutrition or over-nutrition. Under-nutrition occurs due to a lack of calories, protein or other essential nutrients. On the other hand, over-nutrition occurs when someone eats more calories than their body needs, thereby missing out on other essential minerals and vitamins. Malnutrition, especially in young children can lead to stunted growth, developmental delays, and frequent illness due to poor immune function. It is important that malnutrition is diagnosed in a timely manner and the habit of eating right is taught to the children at an early age.

Elaborating on the importance of healthy eating, Syed Kamran Husain, HCOO-CARE Hospitals said “Nutrition is a science or practice of consuming and utilizing healthy foods. A balanced diet is important for good health and well-being. People should include whole grains, fruits, vegetables, fat-free milk, etc. in their daily diet intake. This will not only help in growth and development but also makes the immune system strong.”
