18 year old boy drowned in canal during Ganesh idol immersion

GURUGRAM: An 18-year-old youth from Bihar who went to a canal to immerse the idol of Lord Ganesha along with his friends in Dhankot village of Gurugram died around 8 pm on Monday, police said.

His body was recovered from the canal with the help of divers at around 6.30 am on Tuesday, police said. According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Rohit, who was presently a resident of Chauma village in Gurugram and had gone to the canal on Monday night along with two of his friends to immerse the idol of Lord Ganesha.Police said he slipped during the immersion and got washed away in the water flow in the canal.Soon after being informed, a team from Rajendra Park police station and a fire brigade were rushed to the spot and a team of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was also called to locate and retrieve the body from the canal.Another youth, Sachin, had also slipped, but some friends jumped into the canal and managed to pull him out, a police officer said. Preliminary investigation reveals that the victim lost balance as soon as she stepped into the canal and was swept away.Police have initiated legal action under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).The victim's family in Bihar has been informed and the body will be handed over to them after the post-mortem, the official said.
