Government Strengthens Anti-Smuggling Efforts with Tech & Coordination
The government is intensifying inter-agency coordination to combat smuggling, focusing on intelligence sharing and technology adoption. Mohan Kumar Singh, Member (Compliance Management), CBIC, emphasized the need for data-driven strategies and collaboration among enforcement agencies. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has established an anti-smuggling coordination platform to streamline efforts and target key figures behind illicit trade.
Highlighting the challenge, Anil Rajput, Chairman, FICCI CASCADE, stressed the role of consumers in curbing smuggling. He advocated for spreading awareness among youth and leveraging advanced technology. Former Deputy National Security Advisor Pankaj Kumar Singh pointed out the growing use of drones in smuggling and underscored the importance of combining human intelligence with technology to counter illicit trade. He emphasized that patriotic citizens can aid enforcement agencies in intelligence gathering.
Former NDRF and ITBP Director General R.K. Pachnanda lauded the government’s proactive stance, enhancing coordination between administrative, security, intelligence, and diplomatic agencies. He commended FICCI CASCADE’s initiatives, including awareness campaigns.
As part of Anti-Smuggling Day, FICCI CASCADE organized a digital art competition themed "Stand Against Smuggling," drawing 3,000 entries nationwide. Winners were felicitated during the event, reinforcing the importance of ethical consumer behavior.
The DRI’s 2023-24 report revealed seizures of over 8,000 kg of narcotics, 1,319 kg of gold, and smuggled cigarettes worth Rs. 178.82 crores. The illicit cigarette market alone is estimated at Rs. 17,250–23,000 crores, causing a revenue loss of approximately Rs. 21,000 crores.
Launched in 2022, Anti-Smuggling Day aims to raise awareness, foster inter-agency cooperation, and strengthen enforcement efforts. Recognizing it at the UN level could enhance global collaboration in tackling smuggling.
