Mother and daughter buried alive by boulders during MGNREGS work in Telangana
Hyderabad: In a tragic incident on Thursday, January 30, a mother and daughter lost their lives, and several others were injured while working on Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) projects in Godardhanagiri village, Akkannapeta mandal, Siddipet district.
Kandarapu Saravva, 50, and Annaji Mamatha, 32, were among 21 workers digging earth from Sanjeevarayani Gutta, a hilly mound in the village, to lay tar roads to agricultural lands using shovels. Suddenly, boulders and earth collapsed on them.
Despite efforts by villagers to rescue them using JCB machines, both women could not be saved.
Five other NREGS workers—Indrala Swaroopa, Indrala Renuka, Valaboju Manemma, Gouda Venkataiah, and Thatikonda Vimala—suffered severe injuries in the incident. The injured were taken to Husnabad Government Hospital, while Swaroopa was later shifted to Warangal MGM Hospital for advanced treatment.
The police have registered a case based on a complaint from the victims' families and have launched an investigation.
