"Your Service Will Be Stopped Within Two Hours" — Beware of Telecom Scam Calls

Beware of Fraud Calls Claiming to Be from Telecom Department

The call began with a recorded message stating: "Hello, this is a notification from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. Due to the abnormal usage of your phone number, your service will be suspended within two hours. For more details, please press 9. For customer service, press 0."

A disturbing new scam has emerged where fraudsters impersonate officials from the telecom department, falsely accusing individuals of illegal activities linked to their phone numbers.

In one such case, a victim received a call from someone pretending to be a telecom department representative based in Delhi. The caller alleged that the victim’s phone number was being used for illegal advertising and harassment. To add credibility, the scammer claimed that a phone number — 9839768051 — was registered under the victim’s name and flagged for misconduct.

To manipulate the victim further, the fraudster posed as an employee of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and insisted that the victim provide a video statement to "clear their name." The victim was pressured into compliance, fearing the immediate suspension of their phone services.

One of our reporters experienced a similar fraudulent call in the early morning hours, where scammers attempted to manipulate him by speaking fluent English. However, he acted swiftly and avoided falling for their trap.

Such calls are part of a growing scam where fraudsters try to deceive victims into sharing personal details or taking unnecessary actions.

Important Reminder:
If you receive such calls, ignore them and do not interact with the caller or follow their instructions. Stay alert and avoid becoming a victim of these fraudulent schemes. Always report suspicious calls to your telecom provider or the authorities.

How to Stay Safe:

  1. Verify Caller Identity: Always confirm the identity of anyone claiming to be from an official organization. Hang up and call the official helpline of the concerned department.
  2. Do Not Share Personal Information: Avoid sharing sensitive details or recording statements unless you are certain of the caller’s authenticity.
  3. Report Such Incidents: Immediately report suspicious calls to your telecom provider or local law enforcement.

Stay vigilant and spread awareness to prevent others from falling victim to such scams.
