Police Officer Suspended for Adding Ash to Maha Kumbh Feast
On Thursday, January 30, police officer Brijesh Kumar Tiwari was officially suspended after a video surfaced on social media showing him allegedly mixing ash into the food being prepared for devotees at a Bhandara (community feast) during the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Tiwari, the Station House Officer (SHO), was seen in the video using a spade to throw ash into the food being cooked on a stove.
The video quickly went viral, sparking public outrage and prompting a swift response from authorities. An X user shared the video, bringing the matter to the attention of the Ganga Nagar DCP, who called for immediate action and the officer's dismissal over the "shameful act." The Ganga Nagar DCP responded, stating that the SHO was suspended based on a report from ACP Soraon, and departmental proceedings are underway.
DCP Kuldeep Singh Gunawat confirmed the suspension, noting that action was taken following the video’s release on social media.
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav also shared the video, highlighting the impact of political animosity on the efforts to provide meals and water to devotees at the Kumbh. "Unfortunately, the good efforts of those arranging food for the people at the Maha Kumbh are being undermined due to political differences. The public must take notice," Yadav wrote.
The Maha Kumbh Mela sees millions of devotees visiting Prayagraj, many of whom rely on community kitchens set up by individuals, groups, and organizations to receive free or affordable meals. This incident has raised concerns over the safety of the meals and the public's trust in these service efforts.
Authorities have implemented strict measures to prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of devotees during the festival, which is held every 12 years and is considered one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.
